Ken and Bill Update

Ken,
He is still making good progress. He is able to eat and move about and his words and sense of humor are still the same old Ken we have come to appreciate. As of this time, Wed. 4.10pm he is still in room 604 PSL, and short visits would be appropriate.

Bill,
I saw him Tues. and he looked good and seemed to be doing well.
Room 311 at Aurora So.

Please keep both in your prayers.

10/6/08 Prayer Reports

Family and Friends and Prayer Helpers,
What a day! We were concerned because Ken had been told that the tumor was in an area that would give him double vision problems in addition to other possible motor skill problems.
The surgeon, Dr. Lamont, came and told us after the six hours surgery that there were several good news items. It seems to us that God blessed him with a good day helping Ken along with the other doctors, nurses and the Presbyterian St. Luke’s Denver staff.
1. He handled the surgery well.
2. It's a primary tumor, meaning that the tumor probably did not come from another location.
3. It's a low grade tumor, meaning it had not been there are long time.
The pathology report will not be available until Wednesday.
We went to Ken's ICU room after the surgery and he was alert. His vision was good. His hands, feet and motors skills were good. He was quoting numbers from memory like a good CPA. We were all elated.
My friend and Christian brother, Bill Harrell, had knee surgery. He had been through many problems with this knee with staph and such. Today there was no infection found in the knee. The surgery went well I'm told and they replaced the knee joint.
Thanks for your prayers. I got emails from all over the nation. I appreciate it and I know the families do. To the more than 30 people who came to hospitals for these surgeries and prayed with us ~ a special thanks.
God is good. He has called us to be adopted into His family and filled us with His Spirit. He has allowed us to cry out to Him in need and call on our key intercessors. All this works together for His good and His glory. Praise to His name!
Love, Larry Wishard

Ken Jones

Soon there will be a caring bridge site for Ken that we can use. That is still developing, but until then we will use SE announcements.

Received this note from our brother and friend, Ken, which most of you received. I will follow with updates.

Howdy,
Well the day finally arrived today that we met with the neurosurgeon to discuss what needs to be done about my brain tumor. The tumor is about 3 centimeters big and is in the right sub temporal lobe of the brain. The testing that I had done last week did confirm that the tumor is in the non dominant side of my brain. After a lengthy discussion with the doctor today, it is apparent to Reniece and me that there is really no other choice than to have the tumor surgically removed. Radiation will be a part of the overall plan but that is just in addition to the craniotomy for removal of the tumor. The surgery is currently being scheduled and coordinated and we will not know the exact date and time until early next week, but the approximate day will be at the end of September or beginning of October – two weeks or less from now. Procrastination, although a specialty of mine, will not do in this case. There are of course all sorts of potential risks, as the doctor pointed out in great detail, but if all goes as planned, the surgery would take 4-5 hours and I would be in the intensive care area for 2-3 days and in the hospital for a total of about a week. An MRI is done right before the surgery but I will already be under anesthesia when they are doing that so I won’t have any problems getting through that. If any rehab needs to be done, such as speech or memory or physical rehab, then I would be transferred to a rehab center, but if only regular recovery is needed then I will be able to go home. Full recovery under the best case scenario is probably 3-4 months, but Reniece would probably only need to stay home and watch over me closely for a week or so after getting home. The doctor said there shouldn’t be a lot of pain involved in the recovery – of course the area where they go into the skull will be tender for a while, but instead of going through the brain to get to the tumor, they will kind of push that part of the brain up a little and skirt around most of the brain to make it less intrusive. One issue is that there are a lot of vision components around the area where the tumor is, so there is some possibility that I might have double vision, or some fuzziness or holes in my vision for a while, but that should come back to normal over time. After the surgery they will send the tumor to the lab to check to see what kind of tumor it was and whether it is benign or malignant. Later on after the surgery I will probably have to go back to a hospital a few times to have them use a cyber knife on me which is the radiation procedure (that will probably be in Boulder as that is where the machine is). I told the doctor that this was going to be rough on my golf game. At some point in time we will probably set up a website so that we can give updates and you can log on anytime and see what is going on. If we get that done, we will try to let everyone know as soon as we can.
If all goes well, I will still be able to go on vacation at Christmas time in Mexico with Reniece, Marcus and Andrea – although I probably won’t be able to scuba dive.

Love

Report Ken Jones and Sheila's Dad, Ralph

Southeast has been blessed with a couple of blessings I wanted to pass on to you. Ralph Self, Sheila's dad is doing well. He had been feeling so good that he decided to not take his pain meds this evening to help him sleep.

I received a call from Ken Jones. The test went well. He was on the hospital overnight on Thursday, but he is home now. Things were a little more complicated than they expected, but things turned out well so far. Keep praying.
